Joint Research & Development
(Biotech-related)

NAGASE Group is
looking for a partner for
joint development & research in
the industry of biotechnology.

NAGASE Group has the technologies of micro-organisms,

fermentation, enzymes and enzyme reactants.

Our biotechnology is an eco-friendly technologies that utilizes the power of nature such as microorganisms and enzymes.
We will work to create "sustainable businesses" by solving the needs and issues of our customers and society,

such as the development of high-value-added materials that utilize biomass

raw materials and the conversion of chemical products to green chemicals.

Biotechnology is applied in
various fields all over the world.

Nagase Group has been engaged in businesses that utilize biotechnology,

mainly in the fields of food, healthcare, enzymes, and chemicals.

<Case Study>

Commercialization of Ergothioneine

Ergothioneine is a rare natural amino acid found in trace amounts in mushrooms and other organisms, with excellent antioxidant properties and properties which improve brain function. It has high potential as a next-generation functional material and it is anticipated that it could help with neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), depression, skin aging due to ultraviolet light (wrinkles and spots), cataracts, and glycation stress.

Through Nagase R&D Center research with the unique fermentation technology of the NAGASE Group as a core technology, a revolutionary fermentation process was established achieving one of the highest production efficiency levels using microorganisms in the world*. Using the producing strain developed, commercialization will be carried out through applications in the field of life sciences such as health foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Sustainable DHA

Nagase Group has succeeded in developing sustainable docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which has a low environmental impact.

Omega 3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are often used in health foods and supplements, are being consumed all over the world. It is mainly produced by extraction and refining from finite marine resources, and its environmental load has become a social problem.
On the other hand, Labyrinthulea, a microorganism classified as a microalgae, is known to accumulate highly unsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and docosapentaenoic acid in the body.
In addition, DHA is a substance that is very easily oxidized, but it has been reported that Labyrinthulea also accumulates carotenoids such as astaxanthin, which has high antioxidant power, and it is possible to produce more stable DHA.

Nagase Group has developed DHA that can be produced at high concentration and low cost by utilizing the power of Labyrinthulea and the group's unique microbial breeding technology.
These technologies make it possible to produce and provide high-value-added DHA while preserving marine resources. Even now, we are continuing to improve the sustainable production process, such as using sugar cane molasses as a medium raw material.

Nagase Group will continue to provide solutions that contribute to the SDGs, aiming for a safe, secure and warm society where people can live comfortably.

NAGASE Group will contribute to a sustainable

world where people live with peace of mind

by those biotechnology.
